Marketing and Social Media

Making sure our work appeals to our audience and connects back to their interests is one of the hardest things about journalism. Beyond finding a local connection in our writing, we also try to report about campus events and market to our community. Here is some of the ways I have achieved this goal.

Selling ads

To make sure we could print our Highlander magazines, it was necessary to generate revenue. One of the main ways we would do this is by selling ads to businesses in our community. I sold to three businesses, Dragon Baby SeafoodReach and Teach, and Pathwater.

To do so, I developed a sales pitch and went door to door talking to numerous businesses. I also heard that the owners of Patherwater attended Carlmont and wanted to know if they were interested in marketing with us.

Below are some of the ads I sold.

Writing about the community

I had the opportunity to report on Carlmont and the things happening on campus in both my junior and sophomore years. I was able to document sports players returning from COVID suspensions of games and students trying to connect through the virtual campus.

Social media in journalism

As journalism moves online, it became important for me to share my work with others through mediums like Twitter. Below is a couple examples of how I have done this.
