Senior Journalist

In my last year as a Carlmont Journalist, 2022-2023, I started out on the opinion beat. This meant that I could take a stance on issues I cared about and I jumped at this opportunity to explore my passions. Although it was hard writing about controversial topics, I had the opportunity to develop my writing voice and assert my opinions

America’s silent genocide

This was my one unopinionated article this semester and was one of my favorite ones to write. I wrote a feature article on the epidemic of crimes committed against Indigenous American women in the U.S. due to government negligence and the effects of colonization. I valued the unique voices I was able to hear and the stories I was able to tell.

This opinion article allowed me to develop my voice and writing ability by writing about an important issue that I believed needed to be shared. The hardest part of this article was trying to find an angle to approach this issue. But my specific argument that Deshaun Watson should be suspended for longer or banned was able to represent my views without making too general of a claim.

This was my first opinion article and was tough to write. Not only was I taking on a highly controversial issue in the death penalty, but I was also writing about a detestable man. Instead of choosing the plethora of those on death row who could have been innocent or were killed for lighter crimes, I wrote about the Parkland shooter. I was pushed to truly understand both points of view and justify my own.

Along with the opinions I represented above, I wrote several impactful opinion cases that stemmed from personal interests and beliefs. Click on each image to read more off my recent work below!
